Respectfully submitted,
The Rev. Deacon Linda Tardy Wilson, UBE National Secretary (2020-2025)
Addendum I
Report of the National President The Rev. Kim L. Coleman
July 2023 – May 2024
Shaping a New Tomorrow! This is not only the theme chosen by the UBE Board of Directors’ for UBE’s 56th Annual Meeting and Conference events. This also is the essence of the work I and the UBE Board of Directors have undertaken since the beginning of my tenure as your president in July 2019.
Through Annual Fall Committee and Board retreats, reactivation of some committees that had become dormant, and following through on our commitment to community, accountability, transparency, and tough love, we reached out to gain member input into the formation of goals that have undergirded our efforts. Those goals have included:
- reexamining our organizational foundations (i.e., our bylaws, committee structure, policy and procedure manual, social media and other communication vehicles, and membership record keeping system) to assess and rectify when needed the suitability for this 21st century of the way we had been operating;
- liberating ourselves from short term situational and longer-term loan indebtedness to facilitate implementing strategies that provide for lasting financial viability;
- embracing our 501(c)3 status and recognizing our role as champions for all oppressed peoples by acknowledging racism knows no boundaries and pursuing mutually beneficial relationships with siblings of like mind and purpose who are equally as dedicated to its eradication;
- impacting for good the lives of every Episcopalian and Episcopal Diocese by becoming a highly valued resource on the black Episcopal experience through our work, for example, with The Episcopal Church, General Convention, TEC’s Office of African Descent Ministries, General Convention Black Deputies, TEC’s Evangelism, Reconciliation and Creation Care Division, and The Sacred Ground program;
- expanding our reach and involvement with the eradication of racism and celebration of black people across organizational and geographical boundaries to champion inclusivity across global communities with our work with the Liberian Episcopal Community in the United States (LECUSA) and in United Kingdom; and,
- striving to make UBE a household name on the lips of every Episcopalian so that everyone will know of the over 200 years of history of black leadership and contributions black Episcopalians have made to the emerging Beloved Community, we call The Episcopal Church.
My annual reports from prior years delineate in fullness the specific ways in which we have pursued these goals since 2019. We entered my fifth year as your president:
- having survived, even thrived during, the COVID pandemic
- possessing a growing comfort and familiarity with
- debt free and reinvesting an operational surplus to help us fund the coming
- offering a robust menu of programming like Talk2Talk and We’re Talking Now for members to enjoy and to learn what is most needful in these times.
- having successfully and profitably conducted two in-person and one virtual Annual Conference (others were postponed or cancelled due to the pandemic)
We have been shaping a new future for UBE. In this past year, we have focused our attention upon:
- Chapter Relations – Under the direction of First Vice President, The Canon Dr. Lynn Collins, chapter leadership has met regularly to be apprised of important information on UBE life, and to share their experiences, issues and concerns.
- Chapter Compliance – As a 501(c)3 organization, it is vital that we have the documents and assessments in place that validate and confirm that our chapters are in relationship with the National UBE and that our chapters are fulfilling the necessary requirements. This work has proven difficult in some instances because our database is not currently functioning at its maximum potential and chapters may not be accustomed to diligence in the area of chapter requirements. Thanks to the heroic and unflappable efforts of National Secretary, The Rev.
Deacon Linda Wilson, we have made great strides towards bringing our chapters into compliance. Let us all keep in mind the difficulties and do our best not to shoot the messenger.
- Chapter Discipline – As part of our Compliance efforts, we have discovered our bylaws do not adequately address what happens when a chapter is not in compliance. While the
Bylaws committee focused on our voting processes with the current modifications that are being considered at this Annual Meeting, chapter discipline is another priority that must be addressed. The First Vice President, The Rev. Canon Dr. Lynn Collins, bears
responsibility for chapter relations and with the corresponding Regional Director, responds to chapter issues that impact national affiliation.
- National and worldwide presence – We partnered with film producer Brian Ide to promote and engage UBE chapters in attending A Case for Love, a documentary inspired by the teachings and writings of Presiding Bishop Michael Bruce Curry, that examined whether love – specifically unselfish love – is the solution to the extreme societal and political divide facing the Hopefully our UBE members read the credits when the movie aired on January 6, 2024, for UBE was mentioned as a supporting organization.
- National presence – We joined Unite Against Book Bans, a Nationwide Campaign to Stop Banning Books and Censorship organized by the American Library Association. Out of this partnership came the production of Resolution D039 that will be considered by the General Convention and for which a hearing will be held on June 6.
- Unity Across Global Communities – We joined with the Liberian Episcopal Community in the United States (LECUSA) and TEC’s Office of African Descent Ministries to be present in the Diocese of Arkansas on January 6, 2024, as The Rev. John T.W. Harmon was ordained a bishop. UBE presented Bishop Harmon with a blessing cross while he awaits the creation of the handmade vestments he will order from our financial gift.
- Equipping Black Episcopalians for Ordained Ministry – We continue our relationship with Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS) where we were invited to establish our headquarter office in 2019. This year we are pleased to deepen that relationship by offering a new scholarship, the Baxter Textbook Scholarship, made possible by the generosity of The Rt.
Rev. Nathan Baxter, Diocese of Central Pennsylvania, retired, and Mrs. Mary Ellen Walker Baxter. The scholarship will be awarded annually to two or three students of VTS (at least one of whom is a student of color) who have demonstrated an academic and leadership interest in the witness of Black Episcopalians. The scholarship is given in the name of three
exceptional black leaders in the Episcopal Church: The Rt. Rev. Arthur B. Williams, Jr., Black Episcopal Church Pastoral Care and Church Leadership Award; The Rev. Dr. Harold T. Lewis Black Episcopal Church Music, Liturgy and Church History Award; and The Rev. Canon Dr.
Kelly Brown Douglas Black Episcopal Church Progressive Theology Award. We celebrate these leaders as we look forward to celebrating the first awardees who will be selected in the 2024-2025 academic year.
- We have planned and are looking forward to experiencing our 56th Annual Conference slated to take place in Louisville, Kentucky from June 18-June 21st. The Coordinator and
Planning Team leader for this Conference is Wendy Wilson Walker, our Midwest Region Director. The Conference has been Wendy’s brainchild from beginning to end and she, along with the Planning Team members, are to be commended for the hard work and dedication they applied to this effort. In addition, our group of young people continue to grow under the spectacular leadership of Maya Latimer, our YAYAC (Young Adult, Youth and Children) Coordinator. She will be offering a parallel program for our young people at the Conference in Kentucky. It will be the first conference we have held that is not constrained by COVID or by fulfilling an existing contract and it will be AWESOME.
Beloved siblings of UBE, we have come a long, long, way. We still have a long way to go. None of what we have accomplished could have been done without the tremendous sacrifices being made by UBE’s Executive Committee and entire Board of Directors. Now we need your help. We will be seeking your participation at the National UBE level. Important next steps will require an Assistant Treasurer, a Membership Committee Chair and Committee members, Finance Committee members and your willing cooperation in our continuing work to shape a new future for UBE. Thank you for the privilege of serving as your president. Faithfully yours,
The Rev. Kim L. Coleman UBE National President 2019-2025
